Ruinsara Tal Trek – A Hidden Gem in the Garhwal Himalayas
Ruinsara Tal is a sacred glacial lake nestled within the Govind Wildlife Sanctuary in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, part of the majestic Western Himalayas. Set at an altitude of 3,500 meters, at the base of Mt. Black Peak, this serene lake is surrounded by alpine grasslands and dwarf rhododendrons, creating a tranquil and untouched haven for trekkers and nature lovers.
A Sacred Lake in the Heart of the Mountains
Ruinsara Tal lies near the source of the Supin River (also known as Ruinsara Gad) and spans approximately 1.7 km in length. The trek to this mystical lake offers a deep connection with nature and spirituality, as it is considered sacred by locals. During the journey, trekkers also cross paths with the trail leading over Bali Pass, enhancing the adventure and scenic variety of the trek.

This location also serves as the base camp for multiple expeditions and treks, including Bali Pass, Dhumdhar Kandi Pass, and Swargarohini Base Camp. The route from Devsu Bugyal to Ruinsara Tal, running alongside the Ruinsara River, is both enchanting and moderately challenging. The narrow valley, rich with vibrant alpine flowers, offers a stunning visual treat for every step you take.
Immersive Cultural Experience Through Traditional Villages
One of the highlights of the trek is passing through ancient, charming villages such as Dhatmir, Gangad, Puwani, and Osla. These villages are known for their wooden houses, unique temple architecture, and rich cultural traditions, including folk dances and stories that have been passed down for generations.

Itinerary
Day 1: Drive from Dehradun to Sankri (210 km | 8-9 Hours)
Your journey begins at Dehradun Railway Station, from where you drive to Sankri, a scenic village nestled in the foothills of the Himalayas. The drive offers stunning views of the Yamuna River and the Tons Valley. Along the way, pass through Mussoorie, Damta, Nowgaon, Netwar, and Purola—charming villages where you can witness local life and terraced fields.
As you approach Sankri, you enter the Govind Wildlife Sanctuary. Snow-clad peaks including the Baraadsar mountain range become visible, signaling your arrival. Sankri is a quaint village surrounded by majestic mountains, offering crisp, pollution-free air. Enjoy traditional food in wooden huts and relax for the night in this peaceful setting.
Day 2: Drive from Sankri to Taluka (11 km) | Trek to Cheludgad Camp
After breakfast, drive to Taluka, where your trek begins towards Cheludgad camp. The trail winds through dense forests rich in flora and fauna. Keep an eye out for families of langurs, the vibrant Himalayan Monal (state bird of Uttarakhand), and other rare bird species.
If time does not permit reaching Cheludgad, you can camp beside a stream about 2 km before Taluka. Enjoy your first night under the stars in the serene wilderness.
Day 3: Trek from Cheludgad to Devsu Bugyal
Begin your trek after breakfast with packed lunch. The trail gradually ascends, offering breathtaking views of snow-capped peaks, waterfalls, and expansive valleys. The forest is alive with birch, spruce, and rare Himalayan wildlife and flowers.
After a final steep ascent, you arrive at Devsu Bugyal—a vast, green meadow ideal for camping. The views of Black Peak (Kalanag) from here are truly spectacular. Pitch your tents and spend the night amidst nature’s grandeur.
Day 4: Trek from Devsu Bugyal to Ruinsara Lake (3500 m)
Today’s trek leads you to Ruinsara Lake, nestled at the foot of Mt. Black Peak. The trail offers mesmerizing sights of snow-clad peaks and cascading waterfalls. Be cautious on muddy and slippery sections, and cross Supin River via a bridge.
Ruinsara is a sacred freshwater glacial lake surrounded by alpine beauty. After June rains, the area transforms into a lush paradise. From here, enjoy panoramic views of Ruinsara Range, Kalanag, Bandarpoonch, and the Swargarohini peaks. Camp beside the serene lake and rest.
Day 5: Explore the Surroundings
Spend the day exploring the captivating surroundings of Ruinsara Lake. Cross the river to visit Thanga campsite, en route to Bali Pass. You can also trek towards the basecamp of Black Peak and Swargarohini. Adventurous trekkers can attempt the route leading to Dhumdhar Kandi Pass (5490 m), connecting to Gangotri Valley. Return to the campsite and relax for the night.
Day 6: Trek from Ruinsara Lake to Devsu Bugyal
After breakfast, begin your descent back to Devsu Bugyal. Retrace your steps through thick forests, taking in views of waterfalls and valleys. The descent is steep but rewarding. Camp again in the wide-open meadows of Devsu Bugyal and enjoy your final night in the wilderness.
Day 7: Trek from Devsu Bugyal to Taluka | Drive to Sankri
Descend from Devsu Bugyal to Seema/Cheludgad, and continue trekking down to Taluka. Walk through the rich forest landscape, spotting birds and langurs along the way. Upon reaching Taluka, a vehicle will take you back to Sankri (11 km). Spend the night in Sankri and relax.
Day 8: Drive from Sankri to Dehradun
After breakfast, begin the return journey to Dehradun, with lunch en route. Arrive in Dehradun by around 5 PM, marking the end of your scenic and soul-enriching Himalayan trek.

Trek Essential
PARTICIPANTS MUST BRING FOR RUPIN PASS- TREK
- 50–60 ltrs backpack
- Strong hiking boots: a leather upper is best because it gives your ankles more support. If you don’t have a pair yet, you should get one as soon as possible and wear it a lot so that it breaks in well. This will help keep blisters from forming.
- Tennis shoes or sandals that are light enough to wear in camp
- Two pairs of thick wool socks, if possible.
- Two pairs of everyday nylon socks to wear underneath the wool socks to prevent blisters.
- One shirt for hiking, preferably with long sleeves.
- Long John top: This is also called thermal underwear, and it should be made of wool if it is the first layer.
- Two each of warm shirts and pants for camp
- 1 each rain cot/poncho
- Warm Jacket: 1
- One pair of wool gloves as thick as can be bought on the market.
- Long Johns: The first layer should be wool if possible.
- Under wear: 2-3 changes Shorts or pants for hiking: 1
- Sunscreen lotion is up to you. Chap stick or lip balm is optional.
- Water bottle: Two 1-liter bottles (Pepsi bottles work well), make sure they don’t leak.
- Headlamp or flashlight: A headlamp is best because it frees up your hands for work. If you bring a flashlight, bring extra batteries.
- Items for the bathroom, like a toothbrush, toothpaste, etc. And a small one-person medical kit.
- Cotton or nylon for a sun hat. Sunglasses: Those with an anchor are best.
