The Chopta Tungnath Chandrashila Trek is one of the most popular and scenic trekking destinations in Uttarakhand, India. It offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, spiritual significance, and adventure, making it ideal for trekkers, nature enthusiasts, and peace seekers.

This entire region falls under the Kedarnath Musk Deer Sanctuary in Rudraprayag District, located at an approximate altitude of 2,608 meters. Early mornings often bring opportunities to spot wildlife, including wild goats and the vibrant Himalayan Monal.

Often dubbed the “Mini Switzerland of Uttarakhand,” Chopta is nestled amidst the majestic Garhwal Himalayas, offering stunning landscapes, velvety meadows (Bugyals), and snow-capped peaks. The region transforms beautifully with each season—

Spiritual Significance: Tungnath Temple

Tungnath is one of the five holiest Shiva temples (Panch Kedar) in Uttarakhand and is the highest Shiva temple in the world. It stands near Chandrashila Peak and is surrounded by the other four Kedars:

  • Kedarnath and Madmaheshwar to the west
  • Rudranath and Kalpeshwar to the east

Pilgrims and trekkers alike are drawn to its ancient spiritual aura and majestic location.

Day 1 – Rishikesh to Chopta Camp (202 km / 7-8 Hours / 2,012 meters)

Pickup from Rishikesh railway station at 7:30 am. Begin your scenic drive to Chopta, passing through beautiful landscapes and culturally rich towns of Uttarakhand.

Journey Highlights:

  • Rishikesh: Known as the “Yoga Capital of the World,” Rishikesh is a serene spiritual town on the banks of the Ganges River, famous for yoga centers, ashrams, and adventure sports.

  • Devprayag: The confluence point of the Alaknanda and Bhagirathi rivers, forming the holy Ganges. This town is rich in religious significance and surrounded by stunning mountain views.

  • Rudraprayag: Another sacred confluence, where the Alaknanda meets the Mandakini River. Known for ancient temples and tranquil beauty.

  • Sari Village: A charming Himalayan village and the base for the Deoriatal trek, offering views of towering Himalayan peaks.

Arrive at Chopta and settle in at the campsite. Enjoy the fresh mountain air, starry skies, and a peaceful night in nature.


Day 2 – Chopta to Tungnath Temple & Chandrashila Peak Summit (4,130 meters) | Return to Sari Village

Start your trek early from Chopta to Tungnath and then onwards to Chandrashila Peak.

Trek Details:

  • Chopta to Tungnath: Approx. 3.5 km (2-3 hours)

  • Tungnath to Chandrashila Peak: Approx. 1.5 km (1 hour)

Highlights:

  • Tungnath Temple: The world’s highest Shiva temple at 3,680 meters, surrounded by awe-inspiring Himalayan peaks.

  • Chandrashila Peak: At 4,130 meters, the summit offers panoramic views of Nanda Devi, Trishul, Chaukhamba, and Bandarpunch. A small temple dedicated to Lord Shiva marks the summit.

  • Stunning Scenery: The trek features alpine meadows, rhododendron forests, and majestic mountain vistas.

After enjoying the summit, trek back to Sari Village for an overnight stay.


Day 3 – Sari Village to Deoriatal & Return to Rishikesh (220 km / 7-8 Hours)

After breakfast, start your trek to Deoriatal.

Trek to Deoriatal:

  • The trail is well-maintained, lined with rhododendron and maple trees, and offers glimpses of Chandrashila Peak and Tungnath Temple.

  • Along the way, rest at the Hawa Ghar built by the forest department to soak in the scenic views.

  • Arrive at Deoriatal, a serene high-altitude lake at 2,438 meters, surrounded by oak and deodar forests, with reflections of Chaukhamba peaks on clear days.

After exploring, trek back to the road head and drive to Rishikesh.

Return Journey Highlights:

  • Ukhimath: A sacred town known for winter worship of Lord Kedarnath and its ancient temples.

  • Rudraprayag and Devprayag: Relive the peaceful vibes of river confluences and the divine charm of these towns.

  • Ganges Views: Drive along the sacred Ganges, with stops to admire the river and take in the region’s cultural heritage.

Reach Rishikesh between 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm.

Directions to go to Rishikesh:

  • By Air: Jolly Grant Airport is the domestic airport that serves Dehradun, and it receives frequent flights from the main metropolises located across India. From Dehradun, you can take a taxi or bus to Rishikesh for 1-2 hours approx drive.
  • Traveling by Train: The Dehradun junction is the closest railway station, and it has excellent connections to major cities located around India. From Dehradun, you can take a taxi or bus to Rishikesh for 1-2 hours approx drive.
  • PARTICIPANTS MUST BRING FOR CHOPTA CHANDRASHILA TUNGANATH- TREK

    • 50–60 ltrs backpack
    • Strong hiking boots: a leather upper is best because it gives your ankles more support. If you don’t have a pair yet, you should get one as soon as possible and wear it a lot so that it breaks in well. This will help keep blisters from forming.
    • Tennis shoes or sandals that are light enough to wear in camp
    • Two pairs of thick wool socks, if possible.
    • Two pairs of everyday nylon socks to wear underneath the wool socks to prevent blisters.
    • One shirt for hiking, preferably with long sleeves.
    • Long John top: This is also called thermal underwear, and it should be made of wool if it is the first layer.
    • Two each of warm shirts and pants for camp
    • 1 each rain cot/poncho
    • Warm Jacket: 1
    • One pair of wool gloves as thick as can be bought on the market.
    • Long Johns: The first layer should be wool if possible.
    • Under wear: 2-3 changes Shorts or pants for hiking: 1
    • Sunscreen lotion is up to you. Chap stick or lip balm is optional.
    • Water bottle: Two 1-liter bottles (Pepsi bottles work well), make sure they don’t leak.
    • Headlamp or flashlight: A headlamp is best because it frees up your hands for work. If you bring a flashlight, bring extra batteries.
    • Items for the bathroom, like a toothbrush, toothpaste, etc. And a small one-person medical kit.
    • Cotton or nylon for a sun hat. Sunglasses: Those with an anchor are best.
